Setting Up Your Laptop

1. Charging the battery

You will need to leave the computer plugged in to fully charge the battery. On a full charge, a battery will allow you to use your laptop for two to three hours, on average. Should the battery run low during your session, a warning will display on the screen. This would be a good time to save your work. Actual battery performance varies, depending on which power management features are enabled and which applications are being used.

2. Extending the battery charge

Putting your computer on Standby mode when not in use will turn off the display, stop the hard-disk drive, and turn off other internal devices so that the computer uses less battery power. When the computer resumes operation from Standby mode, the desktop is restored exactly as it was before entering Standby mode. You can activate Standby mode by pressing the Fn (Function) and Esc (Escape) keys simultaneously. To resume operation from Standby mode, press the Power button. To change the standby time (the amount of time the computer needs to be dormant before it goes into Standby mode), click on the Power Management icon on the Control Panel, and then select the Power Schemes tab.
